District 3 Commissioner Mark Nelson, who represents the district that includes Duncanville, said that based on this approval, the county will be able to proceed with the necessary improvements to U.S. Highway 82 for it to be used as an access point for the new main station of the Duncanville Volunteer Fire Department and an adjacent storm shelter.

Nelson then explained that these access improvements have a preliminary budget of $250,000, with the county also approving to proceed with the final design work and construction for the new main station.

"The current DVFD station, which was constructed in 1987, is located on Tuscaloosa County School Board property next to Maxwell Elementary," Nelson pointed out. "Construction of this new facility will allow the current fire station building to be removed from its current site and placed on a new fire station site located on Hargrove Road East."

Nelson went on to say that the funding for the construction of the new fire station in Duncanville will be provided by the Tuscaloosa County Commission District 3 funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

The current estimated cost is $782,000.

"In addition to being a home to the DVFD, this new station will have an area that is large enough to be used as the voting location for the Duncanville area to replace the current voting location at Duncanville Middle School," Nelson said. "Tuscaloosa County depends heavily on its volunteer fire departments as first responders for the fire and medical needs of its citizens and I am so pleased we are in a position to construct this new facility.

"Chief [Billy] Doss and the volunteers at DVFD do an outstanding job and like all our volunteer fire fighters, are there for their fellow citizens in times of need," he continued. "I am confident that this new facility will be an asset to Tuscaloosa County and the Duncanville community for many years to come."
