Former TCHS Standout Sets Shelton State Record With Five Hits

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Shelton State Community College sophomore left fielder Trenton Shirley set a school record with five hits in a 18-5 victory over Wallace State-Selma Monday afternoon.

Shirley — a former standout at Tuscaloosa County High School — went 5-for-5 at the plate, reaching base in all six of his plate appearances.

Shirley recorded four runs, three RBIs, and two doubles, with his historic hitting performance included a leadoff single to left field, a two-run double in the third, and an RBI single in the sixth. He also walked and scored in the seventh inning.

Shirley is hitting .380 after 17 games, with two home runs and seven RBIs.

Shelton State's pitching staff was spread across eight pitchers, with freshman Josh Beasley (1-0) earning the win in his first career start.

Beasley was relieved by Jackson Henderson, Landon Shumate, Jack Sanderson, Weston Wright, Robicheaux, Kenneth Diddell and Payton Zupancic.

Sophomore third baseman Brady Waugh and freshman centerfielder Zupancic each contributed three hits in the win, with Waugh adding two RBIs and two runs, while Zupancic scored two runs.

Sophomores Hayes Alford, Tripp Gann and Brexton Taft, along with freshman John Robicheaux, all had multiple RBIs for the Bucs.

Alford finished with three RBIs and scored three times, while Robicheaux added two RBIs, including a sacrifice fly in the second inning.

The Bucs (17-3, 3-1 ACCC) will return to action Wednesday when they host Chattahoochee Valley at 2 p.m., before traveling to Phenix City on Friday for a noon matchup.
