Governor Sets Date For Special Election To Fill House District 63 Seat

Gov. Kay Ivey has officially set certain dates leading up to a special election to fill the now-vacant House District 63 seat.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has officially set certain dates leading up to a special election to fill the now-vacant District 63 seat in the Alabama House of Representatives.

As Patch previously reported, former State Rep. Cynthia Lee Almond, a Republican from Tuscaloosa, stepped down from her seat after being appointed by Ivey as the next president of the Alabama Public Service Commission.

Tuscaloosa City Council member Norman Crow is the only candidate thus far to announce their bid for the office. He is running as a Republican.

Ivey has set the primary date for Tuesday, Sept. 30, with the runoff — if needed — scheduled for Oct. 28.

The special general election will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2026.

The governor's office says the last day for any candidate to qualify with major political parties will be Monday, June 23, 2025, at 5 p.m.

Ivey also said the two major political parties will certify their qualified candidates to the Secretary of State as soon as possible after the qualification deadline but by no later than noon on Wednesday, June 25.

All independent candidates and any minor parties are advised that the deadline for filing the appropriate notification, petitions, or supporting paperwork with the Secretary of State shall be Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2025, at 5 p.m.
