Potts said the Women Build program is part of a national initiative designed to engage, educate, and empower women to provide safe and affordable housing for families in need.

She then said this year’s effort will see a home built for LaPorchia Mitchell at 4204 Milestone Circle.

Habitat homeowners like Mitchell work alongside volunteers, purchasing their homes at fair market value through a 30-year mortgage with 0% interest. Habitat says the model is intended to foster strength, stability, and independence for families.

Terry Saban and the Nick's Kids Foundation has facilitated the construction of Habitat homes for 21 local families.

In addition to the Women Build, Habitat Tuscaloosa will also construct a “Legacy Build” house in honor of Coach Nick Saban, who retired at the end of last football season.

Habitat says both homes are set to be dedicated during Thanksgiving week, with Saban and Ms. Terry in attendance.

The organization is also seeking more female volunteers for the project and interested individuals can sign up on the Habitat Tuscaloosa website.

Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and those under 19 will require parental consent.

Shifts run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
