As Patch previously reported, Deavours died in March 2024 at the age of 76, leaving a lasting legacy on many of the young men that he coached over the decades at Northside High School and his alma mater at Berry High School.

Over 32 years as the boys basketball coach for the Rams, Deavours posted a 465-340 career record — a mark that is unlikely to ever be touched in the school's history.

"When I think of Coach Deavours I think of a great man that taught me so much more than just about sports. He taught us about life and showed love to everyone he met," organizer and Northside alum Jeremy Smith said. "He gave to so many and always put everyone else before himself. He was a father figure to me...much more than just my coach. I am honored to be able to do something in rememberance of him and keep his legacy, alive."

Smith said proceeds from his rodeo will be given to the Coach Steve Deavours Scholarship Fund.

Patch previously reported the scholarship would be given to a graduating senior from Berry High School and Northside High School who is choosing to become an educator.

"We need the entire community to come out and support this wonderful event," Smith said. "If you or your company would like to be a part of this, call me anytime to discuss opportunities. Coach Steve Deavours touched so many lives in so many places so please come out and support this event and help get the word out in the community."

Smith can be reached at (205) 908-5049.
