TUSCALOOSA, AL — With the ongoing federal government shutdown prompting a temporary suspension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits in November, food pantries in the Tuscaloosa area are preparing for increased demand and urging residents to take note of available resources and operating hours.

As Patch previously reported, the Alabama Department of Human Resources (DHR) confirmed this week that no new SNAP benefit allotments will be distributed for November until Congress restores funding or federal agencies receive additional direction.

Families can continue to use any benefits already issued on their Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards but will not receive new funds until the suspension is lifted.
More than 750,000 Alabamians rely on SNAP, which delivers roughly $140 million in assistance each month.

DHR Commissioner Nancy Buckner said the disruption could place “vitally important” nutrition aid at risk for some of the state’s most vulnerable residents.
