Captain Jack Kennedy, commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, told local media Wednesday afternoon that the victim was identified as 18-year-old Cameron Jamal Mikquise Thompson.
Investigators initially said, and it was widely reported, that the victim was a woman but Kennedy provided an update to the investigation by saying that Thompson "identified as a female."

Kennedy said the shooting was determined to have occurred earlier just after midnight Monday.
Following an investigation, a minor was taken into custody and will be charged as an adult with murder in the case.
"The motive appears to be related to comments the victim posted on social media regarding the suspect’s sexual orientation," Kennedy said.
Kennedy then cited state law in saying law enforcement is prohibited from releasing any information concerning the suspect due to his age.
