Leadership Tuscaloosa To Build Basketball Court At New Heights Community Resource Center

Leadership Tuscaloosa has unveiled its class project, which will include a fundraiser to construct a basketball court at the center.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — The Leadership Tuscaloosa class of 2024-2025 has unveiled its class project, which will include a fundraiser to construct a basketball court and pavilion at the New Heights Community Resource Center (NHCRC).

Dubbed "New Hoops 4 New Heights," the project aims to provide a safe, accessible space for youth and families to gather, play and engage in their community.

The project will be made possible through a partnership with the New Heights Foundation Inc., a 501(c)(3) organization, which offers a variety of essential services to the community.

The center is one of the first of its kind in Alabama and provides a wide range of programs focused on education, homelessness prevention, youth services, mental health, and healthcare, in collaboration with Tuscaloosa City Schools and local nonprofit organizations.

“This project is more than just a basketball court. It’s about building community, fostering healthy relationships, and providing a space for everyone to thrive,” Leadership Tuscaloosa class member Karen Burklew.

The Leadership Tuscaloosa class is seeking both monetary donations and in-kind contributions, including concrete, excavating services, metal roofing, basketball goals, garbage cans and basketballs.

Organizers say groundbreaking ceremony will be held on March 25 at 10 a.m. at the New Heights Community Resource Center

Tax-deductible donations can be made online here or by mailing checks to New Heights Foundation Inc., 3834 21st Street, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401.
