New York Jets Name Former Tide Broadcaster, Coach As Interim GM

Former Tide assistant football coach and radio broadcaster Phil Savage has been named the interim general manager of the New York Jets.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — Former Crimson Tide assistant football coach and radio broadcaster Phil Savage has been named the interim general manager of the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL).

Savage previously worked at the University of Alabama as a graduate assistant in 1987 and tight ends coach from 1988-89 before joining the coaching staff at UCLA in 1990.

Savage also later worked as the radio color commentator for the Crimson Tide Sports Network from 2009 to 2017, as the Crimson Tide won five national championships.

While working in the broadcast booth for the Crimson Tide, Savage was also a front-office insider for ESPN and provided analysis for SiriusXM on their NFL and college conference channels.

Savage joined the New York Jets in June 2019 after working as the Reese's Senior Bowl executive director from 2012 to 2018 and as the general manager of the Arizona Hotshots in the Alliance of American Football from 2018 to 2019.

Savage's NFL career began as a defensive assistant coach with the Browns in 1991, before transitioning to scouting.

He has held several positions with Cleveland, Baltimore and Philadelphia.

Savage was also with the the Ravens when Baltimore won Super Bowl XXXV and drafted ten Pro Bowl players, including Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees, Jonathan Ogden, Ray Lewis and Ed Reed.

While working for Reese's Senior Bowl, Savage spearheaded the organization's efforts in securing the current title sponsor through The Hershey Company, while having a number of future All-Pro selections come through Mobile on their way to the NFL, including Josh Allen, Aaron Donald, Lane Johnson, Kyle Jusczcyk, Cooper Kupp, Zach Martin and Fred Warner.

Savage has a degree in English from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, where he played quarterback and was also a three-time all-conference shortstop in baseball.

He also received a master's degree in physical education from the University of Alabama in 1989.

Savage and his wife, Dorothy, have a daughter, Honor Blue, and a son, Ever Brave.
