NWS Preliminary Survey Concludes EF-1 Tornado Hit Eutaw

Here's a look at the storm damage reported Tuesday evening and Wednesday across the Tuscaloosa Patch coverage area.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — A preliminary storm damage survey by the National Weather Service concluded that an EF-1 tornado likely struck the city of Eutaw in Greene County Tuesday evening as a line of severe storms moved over much of the state.

In one update, the NWS forecast office in Birmingham said winds in excess of 110 mph caused damage to Sagewood Apartments on West End Street in Eutaw, with photos showing the roof of one building completely ripped away.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported in the Tuscaloosa Patch coverage area, despite some structural damage reported in Hale County as well.

Still, others were not as fortunate. The Associated Press reported that significant tornado damage was seen in the Flatwood community north of Montgomery, where two people were killed when a tree struck their home.

Other damage reports received Tuesday by the NOAA Storm Prediction Center.

  • Damage to trees and power lines was reported on the Stillman College campus in west Tuscaloosa.
  • Trees blown down along County Road 121 in Fayette County.
  • Roof damage reported at storage buildings on Main Street in Sumiton in Walker County. The storm damage report says the left side of the building sustained damage.
  • Damage to trees and power lines in other Walker County communities such as Boldo, Sipsey and Piney Woods.
  • Tree damage at Mudcreek Road and Harmon Road in Oak Grove.
  • Tree damage reported on Wayne Road just northeast of Sweet Water, with one large tree causing damage to a residence.
