One Killed, One Injured In Sumter County Crash

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is investigating a fatal crash in Sumter County that resulted in the death of an Epes man.

TUSCALOOSA, AL — The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is investigating a fatal crash in Sumter County that resulted in the death of an Epes man.

ALEA says the two-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 9:10 p.m. Friday, March 28, when the 2004 Toyota Camry driven by Carl E. Burrell, 62, collided head-on with the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD.

Investigators found that, after the initial crash, the Toyota Camry left the roadway and overturned.

ALEA says Burrell was not using a seat belt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Chevrolet was also injured and transported to DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa for medical treatment.

The crash occurred on Alabama Highway 39 near the 5 mile marker, roughly five miles south of Gainesville in Sumter County.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
