NORTHPORT, AL — Patch has confirmed that a Samantha man was killed in a single-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon on Alabama Highway 69 North.

Nickolas A. Griffin, a father who once attended Northside High School, was first publicly identified by his family as the victim of the fatal crash, which occurred at approximately 4:21 p.m. — a little more than two miles south of the Windham Springs community.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) confirmed the news on Friday and said Griffin, 44, was killed when the 1999 Honda CRV he was driving left the roadway, struck an embankment and overturned.
ALEA also said Griffin was not using a seat belt at the time of the crash, was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.

Both lanes of Highway 69 were blocked Thursday evening as the investigation commenced but have since re-opened.
