The KAYF started in February 2017 as a dedication to the life and memory of Kristen Amerson, who struggled with mental health and took her own life on April 10, 2014.

Kristen loved fashion, dancing, and education. She also remains the "lynchpin" that KAYF honors in its quest to ensure that youth and adolescents in the city of Tuscaloosa do not share the same fate as Kristen.
