Captain Jack Kennedy, commander of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, said the suspect, 19-year-old Keshawn Jermichael Woods, had been living with Houston in her apartment for several months.
Witnesses told investigators that an argument broke out late Monday, during which Woods pulled out a handgun and began firing. He then reportedly fled on foot.
Houston and her sister were killed, while the 17-year-old was able to flee the apartment and seek help. Several small children, including an infant, were also inside the apartment at the time but were not injured.
Following interviews with witnesses and the surviving victim, investigators obtained warrants for Woods’ arrest on charges of capital murder and attempted murder.
The U.S. Marshals Task Force located Woods a few hours later and took him into custody without incident.
He has been booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail and is being held without bond.
The investigation remains ongoing.
