In an update on Wednesday, VCU Captain Marty Sellers identified the victim as 34-year-old Brittany Bolden, of Tuscaloosa, and said the initial information gathered by investigators first suggested that the fatal injury might’ve been self-inflicted.

He went on to say that interviews with witnesses and further review of evidence resulted in Bolden's boyfriend, 34-year-old Lovelle Rodgers, being charged with capital murder.

Sellers said the murder charge against Rodgers was elevated to capital murder due to the couple's children being present at the time of the shooting.

He also said the couple had domestic violence issues in the past.
