Here are the top stories in Anchorage today:

  1. Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson’s administration is proposing changes to how money from the city’s new alcohol tax is spent, largely devoting it to homelessness. Groups that pushed for the tax say the changes would improperly and disproportionately spend the funds, going against what voters intended when they approved the tax last year. One of the biggest changes is cutting funding for early childhood education grants in half from $2 million to $1 million. (Anchorage Daily News)
  2. World War II veteran Jim Schmidt, 94, of Anchorage, was honored during a Veterans Day ceremony at the Mat-Su Veterans Wall of Honor on Thursday. Senator Dan Sullivan shared Schmidt’s amazing story of service with the crowd gathered in a snowstorm in Wasilla. The veteran first enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 14, later going on to serve in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. (Anchorage Daily News)
  3. As prepared by the Alaska Redistricting Board on Nov. 10, 2021, the political boundaries for House and Senate districts have shifted to accommodate changing populations. New districts are created every 10 years after the U.S. Census determines who lives where in America. Use this map to determine if your district has changed. (Must Read Alaska)
