Here are the top stories in Anchorage today:
- Anchorage Mayor Dave Bronson has vetoed two ordinances that were aimed at asserting the Assembly’s authority over the chamber and the city’s mayoral appointee confirmation process. The first ordinance gave the Assembly control over security, safety, occupancy, and other aspects of the Assembly chamber, including allowing the body to enforce health mandates like the masking requirements the Assembly passed last month. The ordinances had been passed by the Anchorage Assembly on Wednesday, but the mayor and his staff argued that they weren't legal and state statute gives him the authority over all municipal buildings that don’t belong to the school district. - A federal mediator is expected to help resolve differences over key terms of contracts for Anchorage teachers after the union and the state’s largest school district declared an impasse. Currently, teachers have been working under a three-year contract that expired in June. The district offered a salary increase for teachers, but Corey Aist, president of the Anchorage Education Association, said that also remains unresolved as educators are concerned about inflation. Contract negotiations between the district and another union representing 1,300 educational support staff will also head to a federal mediator for advisory arbitration in Jan. (The Seattle Times)
- Don Young has announced his campaign team for the 2022 reelection bid. On Monday, he announced key members, including Alaska State Senator Josh Revak to serve as Campaign Chair, and longtime political strategists Art Hackney and Matt Shuckerow to serve as campaign advisers. Congressman Don Young will be running for his 26th term in the U.S. House of Representatives. (Alaska Native News)
