Here are the top stories today in Anchorage:
- Anchorage School District superintendent, Deena Bishop, will retire at the end of the school year. Bishop, 52, has been superintendent of the state’s largest school district since 2016. She previously worked as superintendent of the Mat-Su Borough School District for five years, and before that as a teacher and principal. Her last day with the district will be June 30, 2022. (Alaska Public Media News)
- The man who died in a South Anchorage motorcycle crash was one of two survivors of the Scandies Rose crab ship sinking on Dec. 31, 2019. Jon Lawler, 36, had been southbound on C Street when the motorcycle lost control in the roundabout at O’Malley Road and C Street just after 7 p.m on Sunday and died at the scene. Police closed down both roundabouts in the area immediately following the crash. (Anchorage Daily News)
- The Alaska USA Foundation raised more than $98,000 in funds through the annual Cash For Cans® fundraiser. Alaska USA Federal Credit Union and the Alaska USA Foundation teamed up for the fundraiser, collecting cash donations at Alaska USA branches during the month of Sept., which is National Hunger Month. Between the money raised from the event, along with an additional donation from the Alaska USA Foundation, numerous food banks and pantries in Alaska, Maricopa County in Arizona, the High Desert region of California, and Washington state will benefit from the more than $120,000 donation.
