Here are the top stories today in Anchorage:

  1. The city wants to build a new snow dump in West Anchorage's Connor's Bog, but some neighbors say it's a bad idea. City planners say the Connor's Bog site is the best option for a proposed snow dump project; the most cost-effective and low-impact site for West Anchorage, where they say a new snow dump is badly needed. However, some residents are worried that they'll lose access to one of the last remaining accessible wild areas in West Anchorage — and see negative environmental impacts to an area that serves as habitat for moose, waterfowl, and migratory birds. 2. When a crew from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson headed up Mount Gordon Lyon in Arctic Valley above Anchorage on Friday to light the 300-foot wide holiday star, they discovered only half of the lights were working. Airmen from the 773rd Civil Engineer Squadron Electrical Shop attempted to repair the lights on Friday and Monday, but they were unable to figure out the problem. The holiday star is about 4,000 feet up the mountain, near a former U.S. Army missile installation, and the presence of a star on the Chugach mountainside has been a tradition for more than 60 years. JBER spokeswoman Erin Eaton believes this is the first year the star hasn't been fully lit on time. (Yahoo!)
  3. Talk of Alaska host Lori Townsend talked about supply constraints with small business owners and discussed how they will affect holiday shopping for Alaskans. Currently, Alaska businesses are facing another holiday season of pandemic problems, this time from shipping delays and price increases that are rippling across the national and international economy. Small business owners from SteamDot Coffee Roasters and Apres Alaska shared their experiences, and the Alaska Small Business Development Center broke down the challenges. (Alaska Public Media)
