• Y-K Delta mushing season kicks off with Season Opener sprint race (kyuk.org) — Bethel kicked off the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta mushing season as 15 dog teams raced from Charles Family Lake to Atmautluak and back in the K300 Season Opener. Akiak musher Mike Williams Jr. won the 32-mile sprint, earning prize money and key Delta Championship points. Local mushers can already look ahead to the Holiday Classic race on December 20.

• Disaster aid deadlines extended into 2026 for those affected by Western Alaska storms (alaskabeacon.com) — If you were hit by recent Western Alaska storms, you can still get help, including at an in‑person assistance hub in Bethel through Dec. 19. State and FEMA deadlines to apply for individual disaster aid now run until Feb. 20, 2026, covering home damage, essential belongings, some medical costs, and even subsistence camps.
