Local leaders favor moving 27 miles inland, but high relocation costs and government hesitation leave families waiting in limbo while they worry about both safety and the future of the Yup’ik language.

Now residents want to move (gpb.org) — Residents of Kwigillingok are still evacuated after Typhoon Halong’s floodwaters floated away 45 homes, killed one person, and left two missing, and many now want to relocate the entire village to higher ground. They’re pressing state and federal officials for help, worried not only about future storms but also about preserving Yup’ik language, culture, and subsistence traditions if families remain scattered in larger cities.
