COCONINO COUNTY, AZ — Five people have been stranded about 21 stories underground since an elevator malfunctioned at Grand Canyon Caverns Sunday evening, authorities confirmed to NBC Monday night.

The visitors are not trapped in the elevator car; they are able to roam the caverns and an adjacent 6-person hotel suite with food service, according to Coconino Sheriff's Office spokesperson Jon Paxton.

It isn’t clear how long it will take to repair the elevator, Paxton added.
