Arizona is 'Appropriately Concerned' About Skin Cancer Risk

A recent survey shows only 34 percent of Americans are worried bout getting skin cancer, which affects 23 in 100,000 Arizona residents.

PHOENIX — Despite a healthy concern for skin cancer in Arizona, only 34 percent of Americans are worried about getting skin cancer, according to a recent survey by Advanced Dermatology.

The company surveyed 2,015 people across all 50 states to learn more about the behaviors and attitudes Americans have towards skin cancer and using sunscreen.

About 23 out of every 100,000 people in Arizona are diagnosed with skin cancer, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. This ranks Arizona as the 18th state with the most skin cancer diagnosis.

When the survey compared diagnosis rate to Google search rate by state, it found that Arizonans were "appropriately concerned" about skin cancer.

How Americans Use Sunscreen

When it came to how frequently respondents wear sunscreen, the majority of them chose "rarely or never" as their answer.

  • Rarely or never: 40 percent
  • Sometimes: 37 percent
  • Most or all of the time: 23 percent

The survey also asked where respondents applied sunscreen. Most respondents said they only apply sunscreen to specific parts of their body.

  • Just certain parts: 54 percent
  • Everywhere: 46 percent

Respondents were most concerned about covering their face or scalp. Here's a breakdown of which parts of the body Americans apply the most sunscreen to:

  • Face or scalp: 68 percent
  • Shoulders or back: 17 percent
  • Neck: 10 percent
  • Chest or stomach: two percent
  • Legs: two percent
