Watch Biden Comfort Meghan McCain As She Talks About Dad's Cancer

The former vice president came to Meghan McCain's side on The View when she became emotional talking about her father's cancer.

Meghan McCain and former Vice President Joe Biden shared an emotional moment on television Wednesday when Biden came to McCain's side to comfort her as she became emotional talking about her father's cancer diagnosis. Biden's son Beau Biden died from the same cancer — glioblastoma — that U.S. Sen. John McCain was diagnosed with earlier this year.

"I couldn't get through your book . . . your son Beau had the same cancer that my father was diagnosed with six months ago," McCain said on The View while holding back tears.

Biden's book "Promise Me Dad" is about his son's illness and death. The book spans just one year but also discusses Biden's role as Vice President and his decision not to pursue the Democratic nomination for president.

"I think about Beau almost every day and I was told that this doesn't get easier but you cultivate the tools to work with this and live with this," she continued. "I know you and your family have been through a tragedy that I haven't conceived of.

"What would you tell people," she said, before Biden got out of his seat. "It's not about me, it's about everyone with cancer," she protested as the former vice president sat down next to her and held her hand.

"One of the things that gave Beau courage — my word — was John," Biden said. "Your dad, you may remember when you were a kid, your dad took care of my Beau."

He went on to say that Beau, who was just 46 years old when he died, talked about the Arizona senator's courage, not about illness. Biden then turned to the audience, reassuring anyone who knows someone diagnosed with glioblastoma, which he said was "as bad as it gets," that there are breakthroughs happening. He pointed to research being done at the University of Pennsylvania's Abramson Cancer Center and treatment that was used on his own son.

"So there is hope and if any body can make it, your dad — her dad is one of my best friends," he told the audience.

"Her dad goes after me hammer and tong, we're like two brothers who were somehow raised by different fathers or something because of our points of view," Biden joked making McCain break out in laughter.

He then told McCain that there's one thing Beau insisted on that her dad will insist on too and that is having hope.

John McCain thanked Biden for his words on Twitter "for serving as an example & source of strength for my own family."

Meghan McCain also thanked Biden for his words.

"There are no words I have to convey my immense gratitude to @JoeBiden and his family - your strength, hope and fortitude are an inspiration to me and so many others daily," she tweeted after the show. "Thank you for your kindness today and sharing your story with us @TheView"
