1 Dead, 8 Wounded In Shootout Between Feds, Accused Smugglers
Authorities say one woman is dead and eight others, including four federal agents, are in the hospital after a shootout in Phoenix.
PHOENIX, AZ — One person is dead and eight are hospitalized after a shooting between Homeland Security agents and a suspected human smuggler near Ahwatukee, reports say. It was around 10 a.m. near 48th Street and Elliott Road when the agents tried to pull over the suspect on a warrant.
There was an exchange of gunfire, reports say, leaving four agents and four people in the vehicle hospitalized. A woman who was inside the suspect's car was killed in the fire, the Arizona Republic reported.
The outlet reported the eight people hospitalized had non life-threatening injuries.

The Phoenix Police Department is leading the investigation into the shooting, reports say, but are not involved in the human smuggling case the Homeland Security agents were working.
ICE is investigating the incident, and said two suspects were hit by the agents' gunfire. The declined to comment further, KTAR reported.

"It sounded like you were in a war zone, like in Syria or something, or Iraq," resident Nick Dalton said, the FOX10 reported.
Jennier Foster, another resident, said there was an initial flurry of gunfire and then a pause. "And then, it went silent, and then, it was again and again and again, so it ended up being, like, it was about 70 gunshots," Foster said, FOX10 reported.
