Sports have a way of teaching invaluable life lessons — building character, fostering teamwork and strengthening the bonds within a community. In the Phoenix area, these values have shaped some truly remarkable athletes from different eras, whose accomplishments continue to inspire.

Patch has teamed up with T-Mobile to spotlight five standout athletes whose achievements have left a lasting mark on our community. While this list is just a snapshot, there are countless others who have helped shape the rich sports culture in our area.


1. Julie Ertz (Soccer)

Julie Ertz is a celebrated American soccer player known for her dominant presence as a key midfielder for the U.S. Women's National Team. Now a resident of Phoenix, Ertz began her soccer journey in Mesa, where she played youth soccer and later attended Dobson High School before heading to Santa Clara University. Ertz played an instrumental role in the team’s victories in the 2015 and 2019 FIFA Women's World Cups, and her resilience in returning to top form after becoming a mother just 10 months before the 2023 World Cup showcased her determination and skill.

2. Andre Ethier (Baseball)

Andre Ethier, a former Major League Baseball outfielder, is best known for his successful career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he earned a reputation as a reliable hitter and solid defensive player. Born and raised in Phoenix, Ethier’s journey to the MLB began at Arizona State University, where he starred for the Sun Devils and set the stage for his professional career. His contributions to both the Dodgers and the broader baseball community were celebrated with his recent induction into the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame.


3. Jerzy Robinson (Basketball)

Jerzy Robinson is a rising star in the world of basketball, gaining attention for her impressive skills and entrepreneurial spirit. Originally from Phoenix, Robinson gained national recognition for her standout performance at Desert Vista High School in Phoenix, as well as continuing to shine at Sierra Canyon High School in Chatsworth, California. She has leveraged her talents on and off the court, including a brand partnership with Nike that has connected her with top women’s basketball stars.

4. Randall McDaniel (Football)

Randall McDaniel is a Hall of Fame offensive lineman known for his dominance on the football field during his career with the Minnesota Vikings and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Born in Phoenix, McDaniel's football journey began at Agua Fria High School in Avondale. He continued his career at Arizona State University, where he developed the skills that would make him a 12-time Pro Bowler and a 9-time All-Pro. Off the field, McDaniel is deeply committed to giving back to his community through charitable initiatives, including his work with Open Arms Home for Children.


5. Patsy Willard (Diving)

Patsy Willard is a former Olympian who gained recognition for her exceptional diving performances. Born in Phoenix, Willard became a standout athlete in her youth, setting multiple records and excelling in national competitions. She represented the United States in the 1960 Olympics, and in 1964, she won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Willard’s success in diving, combined with her dedication and passion for the sport, helped pave the way for future generations of female swimmers and divers.
