Academy Theatre Brings Performing Arts Classes To Underprivileged
Phoenix's Academy Theatre brings tuition-free after-school performing arts classes to underprivileged youth.
PHOENIX, AZ — In a day when budgetary shortfalls are forcing some Phoenix schools to cut art-centered classes, the Academy Theatre is stepping up, providing tuition-free performing arts classes to underprivileged youth who otherwise wouldn’t have access to such programs.
Angel Arredondo, the theatre’s executive director and founder, incarnated Academy Theatre almost 15 years ago in an effort to meld the community, the arts and leadership and life skills. While some might have reservations about the theatre’s location at 1554 W. Van Buren St., Arredondo says it once again goes back to community. “Most would say it’s a sketchy area of town, but we purposely located there for the demographics of whom we serve. To bridge the neighborhood and local businesses together. To take back our streets … and we are an asset to that area. It has improved immensely with our presence and all the associations involved.”
The Academy Theatre provides training in literature, vocals, dance, music, acting and theatre for ages 10 to 18, community events and productions in addition to adult programs. “Our goal is to give members of our organization the skills needed, or to improve on [skills needed], for high school, college or the workforce,” said Arrendondo, who has a background as an author, playwright and screenwriter.

Philip Phung, an Academy Theatre student for four years, says the theatre’s goal has come to fruition in his life. “The Academy Theatre has given me what is most valuable and that is my leadership skills, my performing skills as well as confidence.”
For parents who feel their kids already have too much going on to join the theatre, Arredondo says there are many benefits gained beyond receiving a quality performing arts education. Members of Academy Theatre, he explained, “get a sense of community, being charitable, giving each member a sense of belonging where everyone is accepted, a place they can come to once a week to decompress from school, home or life pressures and be among their peers in a relaxing and comfortable setting.”

David Schweidt, a three-year student at the theatre, concurs. “The Academy Theatre is amazing with many friendly faces and makes you feel that you belong,” he shared.
Adding to the feeling of acceptance is the theatre’s no-audition policy. “Everyone gets a part, all integral parts to a production. Members are casted first by matching character personalities, level of experience and at the director’s discretion,” Arrendondo explained.
Because Academy Theatre is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, Arredondo and his staffers aren’t paid anything. Funding comes from productions’ ticket sales and from community events such as the theatre’s Family Night Prize Bingo on Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. But the volunteer staff and Arredondo still enjoy working there and seeing students grow while enjoying a sense of community.
Academy Theatre’s Recruitment Coordinator, Kristine Copeland, said, “The Academy Theatre is a real treasure! It created a wonderful community when I was involved in the adult program. The Academy Theatre offers so much to all ages. It truly is one of a kind!"
"To me, the Academy Theatre is a place where young minds are transformed into young inspired adults," added Acquisitions Coordinator Tony Perez.
Referring to himself and his volunteer staff, Arredondo said, “We all believe in the program. [We] see the improvements and results [for] a child within a short period of time.”
“We are a small organization with much in it and proudly carry a big heart,” concluded Arrendondo.
Academy Theatre youth rehearsals are held for ages 10-11 on Wednesdays from 5-7 p.m., girls ages 12-16 Tuesdays 6-8:30 p.m. and boys ages 12-16 Thursdays from 6-8:30 p.m. Online enrollment is underway for ages 12-16 (deadline Monday, Aug. 12) and for ages 10-11 (deadline Oct. 2). Adult classes for ages 24 and older begin in November.
