Here are the top three stories today in Phoenix:

  1. On Monday, a chemical spill at a dialysis center in Phoenix resulted in two patients being hospitalized. The incident occurred when four gallons of Minnecare, a potent sterilizing solution, accidentally spilled at the clinic located on Baseline Road near 36th Street. Hazmat crews responded, evacuating the building and neutralizing the substance with sodium bicarbonate. A hazardous material cleanup company was called to dispose of the spilled chemical. (KTAR.com)
  2. Phoenix's Metrocenter mall, set for demolition this summer, will be bid farewell with a grand party titled "Metrocenter: A Fond Farewell" on Sunday, May 21. The event, organized by the city of Phoenix and the mall's current owners, aims to celebrate the legacy of the iconic mall and its significance to Valley residents over the years. Attendees can expect a range of activities including a memory wall, a car show, a 1980s-themed costume contest, live music, food vendors, and a photo booth. Admission is free but attendees are required to RSVP. (Phoenix New Times)
  3. Analy Cota, a senior at Bioscience High School in Phoenix, has received acceptance letters from 17 colleges and universities, with a combined total of $4.6 million in potential scholarships! Despite the challenges presented by the pandemic, which saw classes turn virtual, Cota was able to stay motivated and sign up for sports to help maintain her sanity. She credits her success to her resilience and hard work in the classroom, as well as the support of her family, teachers, and community liaison Lionila Gariepy. Ultimately, she made the decision to attend Williams College in Massachusetts and is set to become a first-generation college student. (ABC15 Arizona in Phoenix)
