Here are the top three stories today in Phoenix:
- The City of Phoenix has been granted $700,000 by the FCC to expand internet connectivity through the Affordable Connectivity Program, aiming to reach more residents. Despite partnering with Common Sense Media and signing up over 50,000 households across Maricopa County, the City of Phoenix estimated 100,000 to 200,000 households were still not participating. To address this, the city plans to utilize the grant for increased outreach efforts, including awareness events, an enhanced toll-free hotline, and in-person application labs, partnering with community-based organizations to build trust and ensure accessibility to the program. Eligible households can receive a monthly credit of $30 or up to $75 for those living on tribal lands, making it possible for them to access affordable or even free internet through various city broadband networks. - An investigation is underway after a shooting occurred near Interstate 17 and 7th Street on Sunday, resulting in the death of a man. Responding to reports of a person with a gun, police discovered an encampment beneath the freeway where the victim had been shot. The incident is currently being investigated by detectives, with the circumstances leading up to the shooting yet to be determined. If anyone has relevant information, they are urged to contact the police at 602-262-6151, Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS, or 480-TESTIGO for Spanish. (FOX 10 News Phoenix)
- Kim Komando, a popular radio host, has reduced the price of her Phoenix production and broadcast studio from $13 million to $8.9M after failing to find a buyer for the fully equipped space. Originally listed with all the studio equipment included, the 26,000-square-foot studio is now being sold without the equipment. The new listing is being handled by Justin Horwitz of SVN Desert Commercial Advisors. (ABC15 Arizona in Phoenix)
