PHOENIX, AZ — You could be one of 5,000 Arizonans owed more than $1,000 in unclaimed property.

The Arizona Department of Revenue is working to return more than $65 million in unclaimed funds to Arizonans that likely don't know that the money is waiting for them. Some of the funds have been unclaimed for 30 years.

The department has sent out notices to the potential property owners and their families to attempt to return the money, according to a news release from the department. One person has unclaimed property worth more than $1.5 million.

Unclaimed property usually comes from old bank accounts, uncashed payroll checks, tax refunds, credit balances, rebates, returned deposits and dormant safe deposit boxes, according to the department.

Property often goes unclaimed because the company holding the funds has an outdated address or the wrong forwarding address for the customer. Sometimes property goes unclaimed when a person dies and their family members don't know about the account.

People can claim their property by providing documentation showing their right to it. Reclaimers must provide a valid photo ID and documentation linking them to the owner of the property's last known address.

In fiscal year 2021, which ended June 30, the Arizona Department of Revenue returned $48 million in unclaimed property.
