Here are the top three stories today in Phoenix:
- Firefighters successfully contained a blaze that erupted in a three-story office building under construction at Phoenix Children’s Hospital on Sunday afternoon. Thomas Road, initially closed between 16th and 20th streets for emergency response, was reopened to commuters by 2:50 p.m. that afternoon. The cause of the fire, which involved debris like roofing materials and pallets on the building's roof, remains under investigation. (Arizona's Family)
- In a welcome development for Phoenix-area commuters, three major freeways — I-17, I-10, and State Route 143 — have reopened ahead of schedule, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Originally slated to open Monday, the northbound lanes of I-17 between Northern Avenue and Greenway Road were made accessible on Sunday morning following the early completion of a pavement improvement project. Similarly, I-10 westbound between Loop 202 and US 60, as well as the southbound lanes of SR 143 between Loop 202 and I-10, resumed operations early after wrapping up their respective construction projects. - In a week marked by high-profile real estate transactions in metro Phoenix, retired DreamWorks Animation President Lew Coleman and HGTV star Pete de Best made headlines by purchasing two of the area's most luxurious homes. Coleman and his wife, Anne Solbraekke, acquired an $8,850,000 Paradise Valley mansion featuring amenities like brass hardware from Amsterdam and an oversized pool with a firepit. Meanwhile, de Best, known for HGTV's "Flip or Flop," bought a $4,500,000 Mediterranean-style home in the Phoenix side of the Arcadia neighborhood, complete with an executive office and its own gate.
