Here are the top three stories today in Phoenix:
- Foo Fighters have announced their first concert in Phoenix since the death of their drummer Taylor Hawkins, with the band set to play at Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre on Oct. 3. Although it's not known who will be playing the drums, tickets will be available for purchase starting on Apr. 14 at livenation.com, with presales taking place starting Apr. 11 through the Citi and Foo Fighters' websites. Hawkins gave his final U.S. performance, which was a headlining set at Innings Festival, on Feb. 26 at Tempe Beach Park. (The Arizona Republic)
- Aerostar has confirmed that the balloon-like objects spotted in the sky by Phoenix residents are their Thunderhead balloon systems, which operate in the stratosphere. The company, which claims to be the world's leader in stratospheric balloons technology, has a history of over 65 years and is known for its highly technical Aerospace & Defense solutions. Aerostar has partnered with NASA to use high-altitude research balloons for studying the Sun and outer space, launching at least 200 balloons each year. (FOX 10 News Phoenix)
- Arizona residents are likely to have encountered creepy crawly critters in their vicinity regardless of where they live, but certain Phoenix-area communities attract specific pests more than others. Mike Boyle, from Burns Pest Elimination, has identified Bug Hot Zones across Arizona where scorpions, bees, bed bugs, cockroaches, and mosquitoes tend to congregate, using heat mapping software to pinpoint zip codes with higher concentrations of pests. Specifically in Phoenix, scorpions are often found in new construction areas like 85050, bed bugs are common in multi-housing units and hotels in 85017, and cockroaches are often found in apartments and condos in 85021. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends removing sources of food, water, and shelter to prevent pests from invading homes. (Arizona's Family)
