Here are the top three stories today in Phoenix:

  1. In south Phoenix, a woman was shot and taken to the hospital with serious injuries on Saturday afternoon. Phoenix police detained a man believed to be involved in the shooting near 30th Street and Broadway Road. The investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances leading to the incident. 2. Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central and Northern Arizona will host the Heart of the House Island Party at Hotel Valley Ho in nearby Scottsdale on Oct. 7. The event aims to raise crucial funds to support their mission of providing a "home-away-from-home" for families seeking critical medical care for their children. The Island Party will feature auctions, a trip raffle, dinner, and dancing, celebrating honorees Bob Souza and Hotel Valley Ho for their support of the organization. (Subscription: Daily Independent)
  3. Phoenix is considering a new parking law that would reduce minimum parking requirements for some apartment complexes, potentially leaving some with no parking spaces. Current law requires 150 parking spaces for every 100 one or two-bedroom apartments, but the proposed legislation would decrease it to 125 spaces. While some believe this could lead to lower rental payments and encourage public transportation use, many neighborhood planning committees are against the reduction, concerned about the impact on parking availability in the city. The city planning commission will present its findings in August, and the city council will vote on it in September. (Arizona's Family)

Today in and around Phoenix:

Monday, July 24

  • Small Batch Trivia From Geeks Who Drink At Z'Tejas, Scottsdale (8:00 PM)

From my notebook:

  • A vacation home rental in nearby Scottsdale called the "Scottsdale Dreamhouse," themed after Barbie, is experiencing increased business due to the release of the "Barbie" movie. The rental company, Scottsdale Beach Club, has seen nonstop inquiries and bookings for the Barbie-themed property, including bookings for various events such as children's birthday parties, Sweet 16s, and adult celebrations. • You can still nominate individuals for the Disability Awards and Recognition Event, which honors individuals, organizations, and businesses for their dedication and service to people with disabilities. The various award categories include Architectural, Business, Nonprofit, Community Service, Outstanding Educator, and the Det. Olsen Lifetime Achievement Award, and must be submitted online by Jul. 31. (City of Phoenix, AZ USA via Facebook)
  • In June, inflation in the Phoenix Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) decelerated to 4.4 percent year-over-year, down from a peak of 13 percent in August 2022 but still higher than the national rate of three percent. The recent decline in all-items inflation is attributed in part to a significant softening of commodity inflation, with the commodities Consumer Price Index for Urban Consumers for the Phoenix MSA dropping by 1.4 percent over the year in June, and the national average also decreasing by 1.2 percent.
