New Phoenix Police Policy Tracks When Officers Aim Guns

A new Phoenix police department policy requires officers to document on-shift encounters in which they aim a gun at a person.

PHOENIX, AZ — The Phoenix police department announced a new policy going into effect Monday, Aug. 19, requiring detailed documentation of any on-shift encounter when an officer aims a gun at a person. Recommended by the National Police Foundation, the measure is part of the Community Police Trust Initiative and will help the police department quantify the frequency of officers deescalating encounters successfully.
