Here are the top three stories today in Phoenix:
- A police-involved shooting occurred Tuesday afternoon near 35th Avenue and Bell Road in Phoenix, resulting in one individual suffering life-threatening injuries and another being taken into custody. The incident transpired when officers, responding to reports of a person brandishing a firearm, were confronted by an individual who allegedly rushed towards them while aiming a weapon, prompting one officer to discharge his firearm. The situation has been contained with no injuries to officers, no remaining suspects at large, and no current danger posed to the community. (ABC15 Arizona in Phoenix)
- Phoenix's record-breaking July heatwave has resulted in an unprecedented demand for ice, leading to widespread shortages across the city. Despite relentless efforts of local ice factories and vendors, the soaring demand has outpaced supply, forcing some establishments like restaurants, gas stations, and grocery stores to run dry. To manage the situation, some vendors like Water and Ice have had to impose limits on the amount of ice one can purchase, while others, such as Corner Express, resort to purchasing ice from larger stores like Costco to meet the needs of their customers. - The City of Phoenix and the AARP Foundation Experience Corps are seeking volunteers aged 50 and above to tutor elementary school children participating in a program to boost literacy rates among third-grade students. The initiative, which has been successful in improving critical literacy skills and classroom behavior according to collected data, requires no prior teaching experience, offering ready-made lesson plans for each two-hour tutoring session. The city is particularly in need of volunteers from the West Valley and West Phoenix, with potential participants required to attend an information session and submit an application to join.
