Here are the top three stories today in Phoenix:
- Early Sunday morning, Phoenix firefighters responded to a double house fire on the west side of the city. Reports of the fire came in around 6:30 a.m. near 67th Avenue and appears the fire started in the garage area with a car potentially catching sparks and spreading throughout the homes. Even though everyone was able to evacuate, large debris piles around the homes contributed to the blaze. (AZFamily.com)
- Adults in Arizona can now obtain contraceptive medications over the counter at a pharmacy without a doctor’s prescription. On Thursday, Jul. 6, Gov. Katie Hobbs says the new rule will go into effect immediately and applies to any self-administered birth control like hormonal or oral contraceptives, as well as patients 18 or older who only need to complete a screening and blood pressure test prior. According to Arizona’s Department of Health Services, over 20 states have statuses that allow pharmacies to dispense FDA-approved hormonal contraception without the need for a prescription. - On Friday, Jul. 7, a 16-year-old boy was shot and killed at an apartment complex in Phoenix. According to local law enforcement, police officers responded to the incident around 10:30 a.m. where Antawn Haynes was hospitalized for life-threatening injuries and later died. Investigators have confirmed that the victim grabbed a handgun from his brother and it ended up going off while he was holding it. (Fox 10 Phoenix)
