PHOENIX, AZ — Just before 3 a.m. Sunday, Phoenix police officers arrived at the scene of a burglary resulting in homicide at an apartment complex near 4900 N. 7th St. The apartment’s resident, a 27-year-old man, told police he was awakened when he heard someone breaking the screen of his rear arcadia door.
The resident then reported that he took hold of his handgun to protect himself. Next, the resident said the perpetrator, a 21-year-old USAF airman, unhinged the patio screen door and removed it. The perpetrator then commenced kicking the glass door. It was then that the resident shot his gun at the would-be intruder. The shot hit the airman, who was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The apartment resident stayed at the scene, cooperating with police. No charges have been filed against the resident, pending further investigation.
