Phoenix Mom Has 'Such Empathy & Compassion For People'

PHOENIX, AZ— Moms do so much for everyone around them. We try to celebrate them all year long, but Mother's Day is a perfect opportunity to shout it from the rooftops and post it on Patch: Mom rocks!

Here at Patch we've launched an initiative to help recognize the awesome moms and mom figures in communities like yours.

This submission comes from Michelle Tremblay who nominated Carol Bates of Phoenix.

What makes your Mom extra special?

My Mother is 85. She volunteers at Ronald McDonald House, works to care for a 94 year old woman and travels a lot to see the world with friends. The first time she showed me what compassion was, she rescued a kitten in a snow storm, getting out of a car, going to every door until it died in her hands. She has helped young adults when their own parents wouldn't. She reads on average three books a month. [She] has taught Sunday School, has read to children at the library and given thousands of books to children. Her generosity is large for one person. She works out, walks and goes to the gym. She's had two knees and a hip replaced, and just keeps trucking. She is largely involved in politics, donates, volunteers hundreds of hours to politics, sending out thousands of cards to people in support of her candidates running, all over the country. I don't know another women with such empathy and compassion for people. Not just my mom, she is everyone's mom.

Why do you feel your Mom deserves the spotlight?

I can't think of a more deserving woman, with such a lifetime of dedication to people and passions.
