Phoenix Names New Deputy City Manager

Phoenix City Manager Jeff Barton announced Wednesday that Alan Stephenson has been selected as Phoenix’s newest Deputy City Manager, effective January 31, 2022. Stephenson has worked for the city for 21 years and has served as Planning and Development Director since 2013.

“Alan is very respected within the planning and development community,” Barton said. “During his career he has been fortunate enough to work on and lead several significant projects for the city. He’s also helped to craft multiple pieces of legislation at the Arizona State Legislature on bills dealing with impact fees, short-term rental impacts, citizen participation, and development process improvement.”

Some of Stephenson’s notable city accomplishments include his work on Edge Treatment Design
Guidelines around the Sonoran Preserve, Reinvent Phoenix Transit Oriented Development Plans, Walkable Urban Code and the adoption of the city's General Plan in 2015 (which was approved by 76% of voters). He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Valley Partnership.

“I’m excited to take my passion for new ideas and creative solutions to the next level,” Stephenson said. “This will be a great opportunity to continue working with Phoenicians as they make the best city in the country even better.”

Stephenson, a Phoenix native, has a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a master’s degree in
Environmental Planning, both from Arizona State University. He will continue to oversee Planning and Development until a new director is named.
