Phoenix Observes Juneteenth On Monday: What Services Will Be Affected?
Mayor Kate Gallego and the City Council voted in Feb. to declare Juneteenth an annual holiday. Here is what you need to know.
PHOENIX, AZ —In February, Mayor Kate Gallego and the Phoenix City Council voted to declare Juneteenth — June 19 — as an annual city holiday.
The holiday, which commemorates the end of slavery in the U.S., will be celebrated this Monday.
The holiday is on June 19th because on that date in 1865, a Union general arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform enslaved African-Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended.

This year, the holiday will be celebrated on June 20 because the actual June 19 is a Sunday. In years when June 19 falls on a Saturday, it will be celebrated a day earlier.
As a paid city holiday, Monday's closures will follow a similar pattern to Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President's Day and Caeser Chavez Day, according to the city. City offices will be closed, though many city services will be available.
