Here are the top three stories in Phoenix today:

  1. A woman, reported to be armed, was hospitalized after being shot by Phoenix Police Department officers on Monday evening following a pursuit that began with a suspicious vehicle near 35th and Glendale avenues. The woman fled when officers approached her vehicle, but her location was tracked by unmarked vehicles and an aerial unit. Eventually, at 19th Avenue and Bell Road, the woman pointed a handgun at officers, resulting in three officers firing their weapons and hitting her once. She is currently receiving treatment for serious injuries and is in stable condition, with no additional information available at this time. (ABC15 Arizona in Phoenix)
  2. A lottery player in Phoenix struck gold in the Powerball drawing, walking away with an impressive $200,000. By opting for Powerplay, they successfully transformed their initial $50,000 win into an even larger sum. The ticket was purchased at a Fry's grocery store located near Tatum Boulevard and Bell Road in Phoenix, with the winning numbers being 09, 38, 48, 52, 68, and the Powerball number 25. (Arizona's Family)
  3. Phoenix has solidified its position as the fifth-largest city in the United States, surpassing Philadelphia in population growth, according to recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau. While Philadelphia's population has declined in the past two years, Phoenix continues to experience rapid expansion, leading to a significant gap between the two cities. The latest population estimates as of July 2022 reveal Phoenix with 1,644,409 residents, securing its spot among the largest cities in the country. (ABC15 Arizona in Phoenix)
