Here are the top three stories in Phoenix today:
- The Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona is hosting its annual Summer Water Safety Day, a free water safety event, at the Hilton Phoenix Tapatio Cliffs Resort on May 13. Families are invited to attend and learn about the dangers of water, following a series of drownings last weekend. The event will feature music, entertainment, and CPR demonstrations, as well as community advocates from fire departments, hospitals, YMCA, swim schools, and more. (ABC15 Arizona in Phoenix)
- A woman was found with gunshot wounds at a downtown Phoenix McDonald's on May 7, according to police. Police found the woman at around 9:00 p.m. at the location near 7th Avenue and Van Buren Street. Although she is expected to survive, the woman was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. It's unclear where the shooting occurred, and the investigation is ongoing, with no suspects currently in custody. (FOX 10 News Phoenix)
- Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has implemented measures to provide families with more childcare options and school-age programming. The Department of Health Services and the Department of Economic Security will establish a separate childcare license for "out-of-school time" programs, while stakeholders including schools, youth development organizations, and providers will collaborate to provide more childcare opportunities. The state will also provide a one-time $500 summer childcare payment per child, which will cover registration fees for eligible students aged between 5 and 12. (KTAR.com)
