Here are the top three stories today in Phoenix:
- The City of Phoenix is expanding its bioscience research with the addition of its third hub, Phoenix Medical Quarter, Global Advancement of Health and Education, located in midtown's Park Central. This new hub joins the existing Phoenix Bioscience Core in downtown Phoenix and the Discovery Oasis on the Mayo Clinic hospital campus in north Phoenix. Mayor Kate Gallego mentioned the latest bioscience hub during her State of the City Address on Apr. 12, and the new hub will create a healthcare triangle of research across the city, with existing schools such as Creighton University's medical school and Alliant International University's nursing program planning to expand on the Park Central campus. - An e-bike caught fire in a home near 27th and Northern Avenues in Phoenix on Thursday morning. The cause of the fire is unknown. Luckily, the family was able to safely escape, but the three people will be displaced — a crisis team will assist them. (AZ Family)
- Gas prices in the Phoenix area have risen by nearly 60 cents over the past month, making them almost as high as California's statewide average. According to AAA, the average gas price in the Phoenix metro area is only 10 cents less than California's average of $4.89 per gallon, sitting at $4.79 per gallon. The head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, Patrick De Haan, suggests that Arizona's unique gas blend requirements, combined with OPEC production cuts, may be contributing to the soaring gas prices.
