Here are the top three stories in Phoenix today:

  1. On Monday, Phoenix went to court to demonstrate its compliance with a judge's order to clear "The Zone" homeless encampment, despite opposition from civil rights advocates. The city is engaged in a civil lawsuit, where officials have a three-day trial to prove that they have cleaned up the area as required. The issue highlights the challenge faced by cities like Phoenix in balancing the concerns of residents and businesses with the rights of homeless individuals. (KTAR.com)
  2. A man was punched during a robbery attempt at an ATM in west Phoenix near 59th Avenue and Thomas Road. The victim had just withdrawn money when the suspect tried to snatch it, but the victim managed to hold onto the cash. In frustration, the suspect punched the victim before fleeing the scene on foot. Fortunately, the victim did not sustain any serious injuries and did not require medical attention. (12news.com KPNX)
  3. Several longstanding restaurants and bars in metro Phoenix closed in the first half of 2023, including a popular Italian eatery, a family-owned Mexican restaurant, bakeries, bars, and a renowned Hawaiian establishment. While some closures were due to owners retiring or seeking work-life balance — such as the husband-and-wife owners behind Bryan's Black Mountain Barbecue —, others hinted at potential reopenings in different locations.
