Here are the top three stories in Phoenix today:

  1. Roberto Y. Longoria, a 42-year-old Phoenix man who died in August 2021 while trying to rescue his coworker during a work-related incident in the West Valley, is set to receive a posthumous Carnegie Medal for heroism. The Carnegie Medal is considered the highest honor of heroism for civilians in North America and is given to individuals who risk themselves to an extraordinary degree saving or attempting to save the lives of others. Longoria, a tanker technician, collapsed and died from hydrogen sulfide gas exposure while attempting to rescue his unresponsive coworker inside a chemical tanker trailer. (ABC15 Arizona in Phoenix)
  2. Many local Phoenix restaurants and mosques are celebrating Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting, by offering special iftar meals for those breaking their fast at sundown. Hana House, a Palestinian restaurant in North Phoenix, hosts an iftar buffet on weekends, serving home-cooked dishes such as seasoned rice, lamb, seafood, and soups. The Islamic Community Center of Phoenix welcomes about 100 people each evening, as it hosts nightly iftars throughout the month and suhoor meals on weekends and during the last 10 days of Ramadan. (Phoenix New Times)
  3. In nearby north Scottsdale, families are worried following two recent coyote attacks on toddlers. In the most recent attack, a Ring security camera captured a coyote sneaking up and biting a young child's arm as he followed his mother up the driveway. The authorities have dispatched officers to patrol the area around the clock and federal agents are considering setting traps to catch the aggressive coyote, which may be responsible for both attacks.
