Here are the top three stories today in Phoenix:

  1. A teenage girl attending a house party in west Phoenix was shot and killed in the early hours of Sunday morning. Police received reports of the shooting near 91st Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road shortly after midnight and found the girl with a gunshot wound outside a residence. Despite the immediate response from firefighters, the girl was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation is still in progress, and authorities have yet to identify the victim or determine a potential suspect. (KTAR.com)
  2. The Arizona Department of Public Safety Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Task Force (CVETF) has announced that Annual International Roadcheck inspections are being conducted on Interstate 17 and Interstate 40 in northern Arizona today (May 16) through May 18. The inspections will be carried out by employees from the United States, Canada, and Mexico, focusing on areas including weigh stations to ensure safe motor vehicle operations and compliance with the North American Standard Inspection Program. The CVETF will prioritize inspections of anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and cargo securement to enhance overall vehicle safety and reduce the risk of accidents. (KTAR.com)
  3. A man, identified as 31-year-old Aires Jordan Holmes, was shot and killed by a homeowner in south Phoenix after allegedly breaking into their house near 18th Avenue and Yuma Street. The incident occurred when a caller reported the break-in to the police and stated that they shot the alleged suspect. Police found Holmes dead at the scene. The homeowner was briefly detained but later released, pending further investigation by the police, who will eventually hand over the case to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for review.
