- The Scottsdale Police Department officer who was shot in a downtown Phoenix shooting last week has been identified as Sgt. Scott Galbraith. Galbraith, a member of the squad for the past 19 years, was shot while assisting with serving a warrant near First Avenue and Roosevelt Street. He was shot through the wall by 37-year-old Kenneth Hearne. Hearne was fatally shot after being tracked down by officers and showing them a gun. Galbraith was released from the hospital on Sunday to recover. (KTAR.com)
- Scottsdale's Civic Center project, which was originally expected to be completed by the end of January 2023, will not host any Super Bowl events. The over $30 million-dollar project is two-thirds of the way finished and will host an indoor car show event on Jan. 22, but the last piece of construction won't finish until March. Scottsdale's Director of Tourism and Events, Karen Churchard, said, "Unfortunately, ESPN didn’t select the Civic Center per se, but we are really thrilled to have ESPN on Main Street which is right across the street." - In nearby Phoenix, fire department clerk Abel Parra was gifted a new van to make his commute to work easier. Fundraising efforts from the Phoenix Fire Department made Parra's old commute of going to the bus stop, taking the bus, then the light rail close to his job — all in a wheelchair — much easier when he was gifted a 2016 Chevy Express 2500 Explorer Limited. Parra, who has been with the department's Fire Prevention Section for 21 years, said, "I’m going to take care of it and pay it forward on my level when I can and how I can." (12news.com KPNX)
