ASU QB To Transfer, Gets Ripped By Teammates On Social Media

Jayden Daniels announced his decision to leave Tempe, and a video posted on Instagram shows players trashing his locker and reputation.

TEMPE, AZ —Jayden Daniels, who has been Arizona State's starting quarterback for the last three seasons, entered the NCAA transfer portal on Thursday, according to multiple sources.

The news came just two months after the San Bernardino, California-native posted a video on social media saying he intended to return for his fourth season in Tempe.

The news of Daniels' impending departure apparently did not go down well with some of his soon-to-be ex-teammates. Or, perhaps they were happy to see him go.

On Friday morning, TMZ.com posted a video it said was from the Instagram account of ASU defensive lineman Travez Moore, which shows a handful of players clearing out Daniels' locker, while also saying some not very complimentary things about the former Sun Devils' signal-caller.

TMZ said the video was deleted from Moore's Instagram account shortly after it was posted.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Daniels burst upon the scene as a true freshman in 2019, throwing for 2,943 yards and 17 touchdowns.

He threw for 701 yards and five touchdowns during the 2020 season, which was shortened to four games because of the pandemic.

This past fall, Daniels threw for 2,381 yards and 10 touchdowns, and also had 10 interceptions as the Sun Devils went 8-5 overall, 6-3 in the Pac-12 and lost to Wisconsin in the Las Vegas Bowl.

Some people considered Daniels' third season disappointing.

"All pressure was on Daniels to deliver in 2021, something he (and the rest of the team) ultimately failed to do," Donnie Druin wrote on SI.com.

There were rumors after the season that Daniels would leave, but he seemed to put those to rest with a Dec. 2 video in which he said he was returning in 2022.

However, Sun Devils' offensive coordinator Zak Hill resigned in January after being placed on administrative leave during an NCAA investigation into alleged improper recruiting practices, according to ESPN.

ESPN speculated that Hill's departure and Daniels reversing his decision to stay might have been linked.

According to SI.com, if Daniels departs, the Sun Devils will open spring practice next month with an open competition for the starting quarterback position.

The team currently features several players at that spot, including: returnees Trenton Bourguet and Finn Collins, Alabama transfer Paul Tyson and high school recruit Bennett Meredith.
