Masks Now Required At Tempe Union High District Schools

The high school district's mask mandate went into effect Tuesday.

TEMPE, AZ — Starting Tuesday, Tempe Union High School District students must mask up for the school day. Tempe Union joins a growing list of Valley schools that implemented mask mandates as COVID-19 continues to spread.

Masks are now required while indoors at all Tempe Union schools. They are not required outdoors.

A message from Tempe Union's Superintendent Kevin Mendivil cited a judge's decision on Monday in Maricopa County Superior Court, ruling that the Arizona Legislature's ban on mask mandates does not take effect until Sept. 29.

"As a result of the level of positive COVID cases we are seeing in our schools, along with the Arizona Department of Health Services metrics that place our District in the “High Transmission” category, we believe that taking this step temporarily will help keep our entire community safe, along with continuing to adhere to our District’s Health Mitigation Plan," Mendivil said in the message to parents.
