AZ Monsoon: Flash Flood Watch For Tucson Extended; NWS

The flash flood watch in place for the Tucson area has been extended an extra day by the National Weather Service. Here's why.

TUCSON, AZ — The flash flood watch for Tucson and points east has been extended through 11 p.m. Friday night, the National Weather Service said.

The warning, which originally was set to expire Thursday night, was extended because of expected heavy rain in the area overnight and into Friday morning.

The warning applies to eastern Pima county, including Tucson, as well as southeast Pinal County. Also included are Santa Cruz, Cochise, Graham and Greenlee counties.

The Old Pueblo has a 36 percent chance of rain Thursday night; before increasing to 49 percent on Friday, the service's seven-day forecast predicts.

From there, Tucson has a 50 percent chance of rain on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday, with a 40 percent shot at precipitation on Sunday.

So far this monsoon, Tucson International Airport has received 1.65 inches of rain, according to the National Weather Service, which is almost double the July average of .96 inches.

Other portions of Tucson, such as the area west of Interstate 10 near Gates Pass, have seen close to five inches of rain this month, which is close to the three-month monsoon rainfall average of 5.69 inches of rain, between June 15 and Sept. 15.
